ABSTRACT

The document outlines an investigation done in order to study Fifth Generation (5G) systems and to identify a role that satellite systems will play in contribution to the many advanced and diverse demands on existing telecommunication networks.

This next generation network is a build-up and phenomenal improvement in wireless communication done by the “5GPP” on the already existing mobile generations. The evolution has seen us move from first generation which employed analogue technology and offered mainly voice service to the end user (e.g. AMPS) to the birth of a digital technology which was the second generation - known as 2G and lead predominantly by GSM standard. This digital technology offered more voice capacity and basic data services (i.e. SMS) to end users. The data speeds 2G offered were around 9.6kb/s. It enlarged coverage of mobile services to greater parts of the globe and gave rapid growth in personal mobile phone ownership to users in differing economies of their respective countries. A rapidly growing user demands in services and data rates drove the wireless communication to its peak. And also drove steady evolution in mobile technology. 3GPP later enhanced the GSM through introduction of the third generation -3G from “late nineties” in 3GPP Release 99/4 to beyond 2010 in 3GPP Release 10. This enhancement has seen the deployment of cutting edge technology, improved data rates and quality of service and consequently of user experience. The focus of this report is to investigate the role that satellite system have in future 5G network, the next chapter will focus at the evolution of mobile satellite.
